Simple Ways to Improve Our Communication Skills

The power of language is a beautiful thing. With it, we have the ability to voice our concerns and express our feelings to others. We have become so advanced in the field of vocal language, that we have even developed methods of non-verbal forms of speaking. Communication in general is very important in our day to day lives. It is so important, that many people have wondered about ways that they could improve on the skill. There are a huge number of ways to improve your communication skills, and we will be discussing a few of them.

Better sleep

We are slowly beginning to determine all the good health benefits that comes with getting a good night’s sleep. Improving your communication skills is one of those benefits. Sleep deprivation is a reason that people tend to miss social cues and signs. So how does someone go about improving their sleep habits? One method is finding a good mattress topper for your bed. Mattress toppers add an extra layer of comfort between you and the mattress, which makes it easier for you to fall asleep. As well, toppers tend to relieve pain from chronic illnesses such as arthritis. If you are finding it difficult to fall asleep due to pain, you could do some research, starting with Sleep Buffs, and look into the best toppers for your mattress.

Practice your conversation skills

Good communication skills take practice. If you always avoid starting a conversation, you will never begin to expand your boundaries. You can try simple conversations at first. For instance, if you are waiting for the bus with someone, you could ask them if they know when it is coming. From there, a simple conversation could pick up. You can also get a good idea as to the progress of a conversation. If it is not progressing as you would like, you can end it.

Try being more assertive

It is important to remember that you are just as valuable to the conversation as anyone else. You have opinions and feelings, and you have something worthwhile to contribute. It might be difficult to bring up your opinion, especially if everyone continually shuts you down. Do not be pushed around by behaviour like this. Having a straight posture and direct eye contact can help you break your way into the conversation and make your point known. Doing this more often will help you get comfortable making a stand.

Conclusion

Good communication skills are essential for both in the workplace and in social settings. By making a few key changes in your lifestyle, you have the ability to improve these skills. One simple method is just making sure that you get a good sleep each night. A mattress topper can help you with that. Otherwise, just practicing your regular conversation skills and assertion skills can be very beneficial to you in the long run. Make sure that everyone knows you are there and you have something to say!

Importance of Communication In International Relations

Feb 22, 2016 by

In this blog entry, I would like to share a story that embodies the importance of communication, especially between people of different race and culture:

>>> Hello. I am Kim and I am from Korea. I grew up in a country where English is not the primary language. I spent almost half of my life in Seoul. I know many of you want to visit my country. I cannot blame you. I am proud to say that Korea is indeed a beautiful place. There are so many things to see and great places to visit, not to mention the beautiful faces and welcoming attitude of Koreans. If there is one thing that I don’t like much about my country, it is the fact that we are not fluent in speaking the English language. As a matter of fact, most of us have difficulties speaking even just the basic English.

I don’t bother myself much about English, well, not until I became an exchange student. I have been dreaming of visiting the beautiful country, Philippines. I was chosen as an exchange student and it was a dream come true. Filipinos are very welcoming. In my first few months in the country, I was able to gain new friends. However, I had difficulties communicating with them. Of course, they know how to speak not just their native language but English too. If there is one thing I love about Filipinos aside from being hospitable, it is the fact that they are fluent in speaking English.

I was to dig in to the conversation. I want to be surrounded by them. I want to communicate with them, but my English is very limited. There was even a time when I feel like I don’t belong because I can’t even start a simple conversation in English. All I know was “hi” “hello” and “thank you.” What I did was I ask a friend to teach me English and Tagalog on the side. I am paying her per hour. I don’t mind paying her as long as I get to have a chance to learn the language. I have been studying the language for quite some time now and I am extremely satisfied with the result. I am now confident speaking the English language. As a matter of fact, I can now start a conversation without worrying if my English is correct or not. Aside from my English tutor, I also do my own research online. Communication is very important and I urge everyone to learn the language before it is too late. <<<

Kim’s story is nothing but a representation of how crucial communication is in the lives of every individual. Of course, despite the story’s English-centric nature, it does not mean that the English language is superior to other languages. While it may be dubbed as the universal language, it does not encompass the vastness and complexity of communication.

Making Long Distance Communication Cheaper

Aug 7, 2015 by

Readers of this site will know that I am all about communication and my preferred method is the gold old fashioned analog way of a face to face encounter with other people. Communication is one of the main distinguishing factors between humans and animals. We have evolved to a stage where practically everything we do involves communicating with other people.

What people do not think about a lot is that communication is not just spoken word. Our posture, demeanor, body language and facial expressions have become an integral part of the way we deal with each other. But modern life has also evolved through technology and fortunately and unfortunately the world has become a small place, making it easier to travel but also to communicate with far away people.

I personally have close friends and family on all 5 continents and because I hate communication through email, instant messaging and SMS I am always picking up the phone if Skype is not available. Despite phone call charges to the rest of the world having come down in the last 15 years, my phone bills have still been causing me some concern.

$150 monthly home phone bills would not be uncommon and I don’t mind paying the price to stay in touch with those close to me. But I did start doing some research into cheaper alternatives in recent months and I think I have a set up now that saving me some serious amounts of money.

The very first thing I did was to buy a cheap VOIP adapter which lets me set up my phone connection over my Internet provider. This would immediately save me the roughly $20 per month line rental that I was paying.

Then I researched some Internet phone service providers with cheap calls to all corners of the world. This is where my phone bills were racking up the highest Dollar amounts, so my focus was on reducing those. I have now been trialing 4 different providers and I am now down to 2 of them which seem to have the most reliable service while offering some very cheap calls.

Finally, I invested in a new home phone system and I found a really great Panasonic cordless phone package. It includes 3 handsets so I can have them spread around the house and I will not end up helplessly searching for a phone only to get to it once the caller has given up.

My test has been running about 3 months now and I can say that the results are nothing short of astounding. I invested about $130 in the adapter and cordless phones (the latter wasn’t really necessary) and so far my average costs have come down to under $80. But this is not really a like for like comparison. I took a closer look at my call time and here is what I have found.

Since switching to VOIP I am using the phone 20% and I am saving almost 50% per month. My initial investment has basically paid for itself already and its all savings from here on.

Working Harder from Home

the stink and dirty show

I was speaking to a long-time friend the other day. He was a national Scrabble champion 15 years ago. He and I have known each other since the fifth grade, and we have remained friends for all these years, despite the fact that we only speak to each other about every two or three years. The last time I talked to him he was marrying his high school sweetheart. I had flown in to stand by his side and support him as his best man. Now, 32 months later, I speak to him again, and his life has changed drastically. He tells me that he had graduated college about a year after the wedding, and went to work for an accounting firm immediately. The job he took seems like it would be a dream because he works from home and gets to choose his own hours. How great is that! Unfortunately, he made a choice that turned his perfectly easy day into a hard day’s work. You see, he and his wife made the decision to forgo babysitting, and he would watch their two boys while she was at work. He told me that in the beginning he couldn’t get any work done. It was a full-time job trying to keep the boys entertained and out of trouble. One day while searching the web he stumbled across a website about a children’s cartoon called The Stinky and Dirty Show. He thought that sounded like a terrible show, and went on about his day.

Later that same day he told me his boys had completely destroyed his backpack and was going to need a new one quick. My buddy told me that he had this website he would go to before he bought anything. The lady that runs the website is a product research expert. She is a mom, and she is very picky about what she buys for her kids. He knows that if she recommends something he can count on the fact that it is the best. So while searching for a ballistic strength backpack he noticed three words….Stinky & Dirty. He could not believe that she had that show on her website! She actually had written a review about the show, and supported it. She said it was the perfect show for boys, and teaches them very good values such as problem-solving skills, and social skills. He couldn’t believe it, but decided to check it out just because she recommended it. My friend said that the show was an answer to his prayers. For the first time, his boys would play constructively. They had learned from the show to find constructive things to do, or figure out instead of running around without a purpose. Before the show they were destroying things, and after they were building things. So thanks to the mom at mommyinspection.com for the wonderful advice, and thanks to thestinkyanddirtyshow.com for setting such a great example for his sons. Now my friend can get some real work done. He works a little less hard from home now, and gets to spend some enjoyable time with his two sons.

The Power of the Internet Over Language

A lot of new words today are coined and made famous because of the Internet. It has become such a powerful tool to the point that it has moved and changed even language.

Well, it is a known fact that almost every year, more and more words have been added to the English dictionary. More and more words have transcend from being colloquial terms into actually being accepted as an official part of the English Language. Even other languages have these constant changes, too.

However, it is during the peak of the age of the Internet that more and more Internet slang have been included as official part of the language. We do not need to go way back. In recent years, terms such as:

Selfie- to take a picture of oneself, usually using a smartphone or camera’s on “selfie sticks.” This has even evolved in “types” such as “bathroom selfies,” “YOLO selfies (which is another term brought about by the internet which means ‘You Only Live Once)” and many more selfies taken in different scenarios and events. Though the highlight of the picture is not the scene nor the event, but oneself.

Tweet – what once was defined as the sound a bird makes, is now given a new meaning. Nowadays, a tweet means a post or an update made via the social media site Twitter.

Twerk – the hit dance craze that Miley Cyrus went viral for, is also an official part of the English dictionary. Who would have thought that such a viral and controversial act would make it to the official list of English words.

The influence of the internet on language is a sign on how powerful this tool is. It shapes societies as much as it has the power to break it. This makes it a very useful tool for progress, but also a scary one at that.

This is the reason why, in order to make sure that only the “good” kind of internet is used by people, service providers that have the ability to constrain “bad” internet and other forms of malware, should be preferred. The process of protecting your network from scary Internet stuff can be done on your own. However, if you either do not have the time to learn how to do it, or if you just want the best kind of internet and communication networking possible, then you can hire an expert service provider to do it for you.  While internet communication is one of the most famous products of this company, they can also assist you in your internet worries because they have the ability to control the networking and communication lines of your internet.

This will be very useful for those families with children, because there will be a limit to the access that your children could have. This is also very useful for families with members in geographically far places because you can be connected through a PBX system that is cost-free, rather than communicating through your usual telephone lines.

Indeed, the Internet has become a very essential part of life. So important and influential that it has also penetrated the realms of language.

I wonder what words it would come up with in the future.

Public Relations is a well sought out job. This job heavily depends on a person’s capability to know how to effectively use words. Communication of all forms very much rely on words. Public Relations becomes very effective when the PRO is able to communicate using words that matter and make sense to the audience or target market he or she is trying to reach.

A lot of people wish to try their luck in this business because of the benefits to be a part of it. For one, you get to work with great companies that have lots of projects. The experience of working for them will surely make all those wishing to be part of Public Relations a very effective ways to learn, and hopefully enter the company in the long run. Another advantage of being in this line of work is that it pays very well, and it pays long term, as long as the client remains with the firm and is satisfied with the output, then the firm is well financed all throughout the years of continued partnership with the different firms. It is also a line of business where you get to be on the field and you get to meet with lots of people.

Because of this strong attraction that individuals have towards taking a career in PR that firms make it a point to choose wisely among the many candidates that wish to work for their PR firm.

The things that firms look for in a soon-to-be Public Relations Officer are:

  • Educational degree. This is important because right there and then, it gives you the idea that this applicant is serious about the job since they have studied for it. Also, it will mean easier and shorter time to train the applicants.
  • Command with words. as mentioned, ability to use the right word for the right occasion and on the right audience is key to making a good PR campaign. People who are able to develop this skill will have high potential at becoming PROs in the firms of their choice.
  • Physical looks. This factor is not intended to discourage those that are not so blessed, physically. This is actually a wake-up call for those people that wish to be in the PR business but fail to value the importance of their body in this line of work. When an applicant presents himself or herself in her best foot forward, this includes presenting himself or herself in the best state of mind and body. Because PR work requires pleasing personalities since they represent the companies.
  • Charm and skills. Sometimes, what is written in paper through educational background is not exhibited properly by an applicant because of the lack of skills that are required to put the knowledge into actuality. This is also important because PROs are ask to deal with people every day and when they lack the skill and charm to handle it, then, they are just not fit for the job.

Public Relations may be ideal for a lot of people, but it is not a career that should be taken lightly. Proper preparation and dedication is needed, and that is what PR Firms like look for in individuals.
